Basic Questions

What is GeM portal registration?

GeM portal registration is the process of creating a verified seller account on gem.gov.in — India official Government e-Marketplace. Once registered, your business can list products and services, participate in government tenders, and receive direct purchase orders from central and state government departments, PSUs, and autonomous bodies across India.

Who can register on GeM portal?

Any legally registered Indian business entity can register on GeM as a seller — including proprietorships, partnership firms, LLPs, private limited companies, public limited companies, trusts, and societies. Service providers (IT, manpower, consultancy) can also register. There is no minimum turnover requirement for basic registration.

Is GeM portal registration free?

Yes, registration on GeM portal is completely free. There are no government fees to create a seller account. However, after registration, sellers must deposit a refundable caution money ranging from Rs.5,000 to Rs.25,000 based on annual turnover before they can list products or bid on tenders.

How long does GeM registration take?

The online form submission takes 30-60 minutes if all documents are ready. Verification and approval typically takes 1-3 working days for correct applications. Incomplete or incorrect documentation can extend this to 7-10 days. With professional consultant help, most businesses are registered and have their first catalogue live within 5-7 working days.

Can I register on GeM without visiting any office?

Yes, GeM registration is 100% online. You do not need to visit any government office. The entire process — from form filling to verification to product listing — is done digitally through gem.gov.in.

Documents & Requirements

What documents are required for GeM registration?

The mandatory documents are: (1) PAN Card of business or individual, (2) Aadhaar Card of authorized signatory, (3) GST Registration Certificate (GSTIN), (4) Business registration proof such as incorporation certificate, partnership deed, or Shop & Establishment license, (5) Bank account details with cancelled cheque, (6) Active email address and Aadhaar-linked mobile number.

Is GST mandatory for GeM registration?

Yes, GST registration is mandatory for most product and service categories on GeM portal. Over 95% of sellers need a valid active GSTIN. Only certain exempted categories like specific handicrafts and artisan products do not require GST. Your GSTIN is automatically verified during the registration process.

Can a proprietorship register on GeM with personal PAN?

Yes, proprietorships can and should use the proprietor's individual PAN for GeM registration. You will also need the proprietor's Aadhaar, GST certificate in the proprietorship name, and a business registration proof such as Udyam certificate or Shop & Establishment license.

What is Udyam and do I need it for GeM?

Udyam is the government MSME registration certificate (previously called Udyog Aadhaar). It is not mandatory for GeM registration but highly recommended. Udyam-registered MSMEs get significant advantages on GeM including reduced caution money, bid preferences, and EMD exemptions in many tenders.

Technical Issues

Why is OTP not coming during GeM registration?

Common reasons: mobile number not linked to Aadhaar, wrong mobile number entered, network issues, or email OTP going to spam folder. Solutions: verify Aadhaar-mobile link at uidai.gov.in, check spam folder, wait 2 minutes before resend, try Google Chrome browser, clear cache. If persistent, call GeM helpline: 1800-419-3436.

What should I do if PAN and Aadhaar name do not match?

PAN-Aadhaar name mismatch is the most common rejection reason. Even a single letter difference causes failure. Update the incorrect document first — PAN can be updated at the Income Tax e-filing portal using Aadhaar OTP. Aadhaar can be updated at any Aadhaar enrollment center. Wait 48 hours after update before attempting GeM registration.

Which browser should I use for GeM registration?

Use Google Chrome (most compatible) or Mozilla Firefox, both updated to the latest version. Clear cache and cookies before starting. Disable ad-blockers and pop-up blockers temporarily. Avoid Internet Explorer or older browser versions.

Post-Registration Questions

What is caution money on GeM and how much do I need to pay?

Caution money is a mandatory refundable security deposit all GeM sellers must pay before listing products or bidding. The amount is: Rs.5,000 for turnover under Rs.1 crore, Rs.10,000 for Rs.1-10 crore, and Rs.25,000 for above Rs.10 crore. It is refunded when you deregister from GeM. Payment is made through the GeM portal via Axis Bank, NEFT, or RTGS.

How do I list my products on GeM after registration?

After paying caution money, go to 'My Dashboard' and click 'Add New Offering'. Search for your product's UNSPSC code (standard product classification code), fill in specifications, upload high-quality images (minimum 800x800 pixels), set your price, and submit for catalogue approval. Approval typically takes 24-72 hours.

How do government buyers find my products on GeM?

To improve visibility: (1) use correct UNSPSC codes, (2) complete your seller profile to 100%, (3) maintain good ratings by fulfilling orders on time, (4) get brand approval if you manufacture branded products, and (5) keep your pricing competitive.
